Maryland state and county tax in 2026
Maryland has ten state income tax rates from 2% to 6.5%. Most middle-income earners pay 4.75% on the bulk of their taxable income. The state standard deduction used for withholding is $3,400 for single filers, and each exemption is worth $3,200.
On top of state tax, every Maryland county and Baltimore City charges a local income tax. For 2026 the rates run from 2.25% to 3.30%, and many large counties charge 3.2%. The calculator uses 3.2% by default. Change it to your county's rate.

How to keep more of your paycheck in Maryland
On a $60,000 salary, putting 5% ($3,000) into a traditional 401(k) reduces your yearly take-home pay by about $2,402 (roughly $92 less every 2 weeks). That is less than the full $3,000 because the contribution saves about $360 in federal income tax and about $239 in Maryland tax. The tax you avoid stays in your pocket instead of going to the government.
Filing status also matters. A married couple filing jointly with one $60,000 income takes home about $48,902 a year in Maryland, compared with $46,197 for a single filer, mostly because of the larger standard deduction and wider tax brackets.
How this calculator works
We subtract your 401(k) contribution and the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly), then apply the 2026 federal brackets (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32). Social Security is 6.2% up to $184,500 of pay, and Medicare is 1.45% (plus 0.9% on high pay). Maryland's standard deduction and exemptions are small, so more of your income is taxed. The joint standard deduction is estimated at double the single amount.
