New York state and city tax in 2026

New York State taxes income in nine brackets from 3.9% to 10.9%. The 2026 budget trimmed the five lowest rates by 0.1 percentage point. The state standard deduction is $8,000 for single filers and $16,050 for married couples filing jointly.

New York City residents pay an additional city income tax of 3.078% to 3.876%. Choose "Yes" in the calculator if you live in the five boroughs. People who only work in the city but live elsewhere do not pay this tax. Yonkers residents pay a separate surcharge that is not included here.

How to keep more of your paycheck in New York

On a $60,000 salary, putting 5% ($3,000) into a traditional 401(k) reduces your yearly take-home pay by about $2,478 (roughly $95 less every 2 weeks). That is less than the full $3,000 because the contribution saves about $360 in federal income tax and about $162 in New York tax. The tax you avoid stays in your pocket instead of going to the government.

Filing status also matters. A married couple filing jointly with one $60,000 income takes home about $50,529 a year in New York, compared with $47,747 for a single filer, mostly because of the larger standard deduction and wider tax brackets.

How this calculator works

We subtract your 401(k) contribution and the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly), then apply the 2026 federal brackets (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32). Social Security is 6.2% up to $184,500 of pay, and Medicare is 1.45% (plus 0.9% on high pay). New York State disability (SDI) and Paid Family Leave deductions are small and are not included.

New York paycheck questions

Do I pay New York City tax if I only work there?

No. The city income tax applies to people who live in New York City. Commuters who live in Westchester, Long Island or New Jersey do not pay it.

How much is the New York standard deduction?

For 2026 it is $8,000 for single filers and $16,050 for married filing jointly.

Why is the New York City option separate?

City tax is added on top of state tax, so it can lower your take-home pay by several hundred dollars per month at higher salaries. Switching the option on shows the difference.
