How this calculator works

Sales tax equals the price before tax times the tax rate. To work backwards from a total, we divide by one plus the rate. Your real rate is the state rate plus any city or county rate, so use the full rate shown on your receipt.

Are all items taxed?

Not always. Groceries, clothing and some other items are exempt in some states.

Which states have no sales tax?

Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no state sales tax, though local taxes may apply in some places.
