About MoneyMeter
MoneyMeter is an independent website that provides free, easy-to-use calculators for everyday money questions. Our goal is simple: let you type in a few numbers and see a clear answer, along with a breakdown of how that answer was worked out.
What you can calculate
- Paychecks: take-home pay calculators for every US state and Washington, DC, showing federal tax, state tax, Social Security and Medicare.
- Home and loans: mortgage, refinance, down payment, home affordability, rent affordability, loan payment, student loan and credit card payoff calculators.
- Saving and investing: compound interest, savings, retirement and Roth IRA calculators.
- Everyday money: budget, tip, sales tax, inflation, overtime, hourly-to-salary, bonus tax, federal income tax and self-employment tax calculators.
How our calculators work
Each calculator page explains the method it uses. For example, our paycheck calculators start with your gross pay, subtract pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) contributions, apply the current federal tax brackets and standard deduction, then apply state income tax rules and payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare). The numbers you type in are processed in your own browser and are not sent to our servers.
Accuracy and limits
We aim to use current published rates and rules, and we update pages when they change. Still, every result is an estimate. Real figures depend on details we cannot see, such as your employer's payroll setup, local taxes, other income, credits and the exact terms offered by a lender. Our calculators are for general information only and are not financial, tax or legal advice. For decisions that matter, check official sources (for example the IRS or your state tax agency) or speak with a qualified professional.
Where our numbers come from
Tax and payroll calculators use figures published by official sources, such as IRS tax brackets and standard deductions, Social Security wage-base limits and state tax agencies. Loan and savings calculators use standard published formulas. When yearly rules change, we update the pages. Each page shows its method so you can check the work yourself.
How the site is funded
MoneyMeter is free to use. The site may display advertising, such as Google AdSense, to help cover running costs. Advertising never changes how a calculator works or what result it shows. You can read how ads and cookies are handled on our Privacy Policy.
