Federal Income Tax Calculator (2026)

Estimate your 2026 federal income tax from your income, filing status and pre-tax deductions.

When to use this calculator

Use this calculator to estimate the federal income tax you owe for 2026 and to see your effective and marginal tax rates. It applies the 2026 standard deduction and tax brackets, which makes it handy for planning, comparing job offers and seeing how a 401(k) contribution lowers your tax.

Example federal tax

$50,000, single$3,820
$75,000, single$7,670
$120,000, married filing jointly$10,040

How this calculator works

We subtract your pre-tax deductions and the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly), then apply the 2026 federal brackets (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32): 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. Each rate only applies to the slice of income inside that bracket.

Step-by-step example

Using these inputs: Yearly income ($): 75000; Filing status: Single; Pre-tax deductions, like 401(k) ($): 0.

Federal income tax$7,670
Standard deduction$16,100
Taxable income$58,900
Effective tax rate10.23%
Marginal tax rate22%
Income after federal tax$67,330

A single filer earning $75,000 has a $16,100 standard deduction, so taxable income is $58,900. The federal tax is about $7,670, an effective rate of 10.23%, even though the top bracket reached is 22%.
