No Tax on Tips Calculator (2026)
The new federal law lets many tipped workers deduct up to $25,000 of tips from their taxable income for 2025 through 2028. Enter your tips and your other pay to see your deduction and how much federal income tax it saves you.
What "no tax on tips" really means
The law does not make tips tax-free in every way. It creates a deduction on your federal income tax return. Your tips still show up on your W-2 or 1099, and you still pay Social Security and Medicare tax on them. Most states also still tax tips unless your state passes its own rule. What changes is that up to $25,000 of qualified tips is subtracted before your federal income tax is figured.
You can claim it whether you take the standard deduction or itemize. It applies to tax years 2025 through 2028.
2026 rules at a glance
Who qualifies
- Workers in jobs where tips were customary before 2025, such as servers, bartenders, hair stylists, delivery drivers, valets and many gig workers.
- Tips must be voluntary: cash or card tips from customers, or tips shared through a tip pool. Automatic service charges added to a bill do not count.
- Tips must be reported on a W-2, 1099 or Form 4137.
- You need a valid Social Security number, and married couples must file jointly.
Examples
Notice the third example: tips above $25,000 do not add more savings. In the last example the income is above $150,000, so the deduction shrinks.
How this calculator works
First it caps your tips at $25,000. Then it lowers that amount by $100 for every $1,000 your income is above $150,000 (or $300,000 if married filing jointly). It figures your 2026 federal income tax with the standard deduction twice, once with and once without the tips deduction, and shows the difference. Your real savings can differ if you have other deductions or credits.
FAQ
Are tips completely tax-free now?
No. Tips are still subject to Social Security and Medicare tax, and usually to state income tax. The new rule is a federal income tax deduction of up to $25,000.
Do I need to itemize to claim it?
No. You can take the tips deduction together with the standard deduction.
Is the $25,000 limit per person or per couple?
The limit is $25,000 per tax return, so a married couple filing jointly shares one $25,000 limit.
Will my paycheck change?
Your employer may still withhold tax on tips the old way. The savings mostly show up when you file your return, unless you adjust your W-4.
Do service charges count as tips?
No. A mandatory service charge added by the business is not a qualified tip. Only voluntary tips count.
