Relocation Salary Calculator (2026)
Transferring or taking a job in another state? Before you negotiate, find out the salary you need in the new state to take home exactly the same amount as today. The calculator works backward through 2026 federal, Social Security, Medicare, state and New York City taxes.
Examples (single, no 401(k))
| Move | Salary needed for the same take-home |
|---|---|
| $120,000 in New York City to Texas | $105,421 |
| $100,000 in California to Florida | $90,967 |
| $90,000 in Texas to California | $98,862 |
| $80,000 in Illinois to Washington | $76,091 |
Moving from a high-tax place to a no-tax state means you can accept a lower salary and still keep the same money. Moving the other way, you should ask for more.
How to use this in a salary negotiation
- Use the number above as your floor: the salary where you are no worse off after tax.
- Then adjust for cost of living. Rent, home prices, car insurance and groceries can matter more than tax.
- Ask about the 401(k) match, health premiums and relocation help. Our job offer comparison calculator adds those in.
- If you will keep working remotely for an out-of-state employer, check the remote work state tax calculator.
How this calculator works
It figures your take-home pay today with the same 2026 tax math used in our 51 state paycheck calculators, including New York City tax if you choose it. Then it searches for the salary in the new state that produces the same take-home pay, with the same filing status and 401(k) percentage. Other local taxes (like Philadelphia or Ohio cities) are not included.
FAQ
How much more should I ask for when moving to a higher-tax state?
Enough to cover the extra state and local tax at your income level, plus any difference in cost of living. The calculator shows the tax part exactly.
Can I take a pay cut when moving to a no-tax state?
Often yes. Moving from New York City or California to Texas or Florida, a lower salary can leave you with the same take-home pay.
Does this include cost of living?
No. It only matches take-home pay after taxes. Compare housing and other costs separately.
Is New York City tax included?
Yes, if you choose that you live in New York City. Other city taxes are not included.
What if I move in the middle of the year?
You will usually file as a part-year resident in both states for that year. The calculator shows a full year in each state.
