Will I Owe Taxes? 2026 Withholding Checker

The 2025 tax law added new deductions for tips, overtime and seniors, and a bigger child tax credit, but most paychecks do not account for them. Side gigs and second jobs push the other way. Enter your numbers from your latest pay stub to see whether you are headed for a refund or a bill in April 2027, and what to change now while there is still time.

The side gig is the classic surprise: no tax is withheld from 1099 income, and it also carries 15.3% self-employment tax. On the other side, workers with tips or overtime and people 65+ are often on track for a bigger refund than usual, because their employer withholds as if the new deductions did not exist.

What changed for 2026

How to fix your withholding

If you will owe, give your employer a new Form W-4 and put the extra amount per paycheck in Step 4(c). If you have a side gig, you can either withhold more at your job or send quarterly estimated payments (Form 1040-ES); the last 2026 payment is due January 15, 2027. If you are getting a big refund, you can lower withholding instead. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator gives the exact W-4 entries.

Will I get a penalty?

Usually not if you owe less than $1,000, or if your withholding and estimated payments cover at least 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's (110% if your AGI was over $150,000). Withholding counts as if it were paid evenly through the year, so raising it in the last few paychecks still helps.

How this calculator works

It subtracts pre-tax deductions from wages, adds side-gig profit and figures self-employment tax (15.3% on 92.35% of profit, with the Social Security part capped at $184,500 including your wages). Then it takes the standard deduction, the extra deduction for 65+, the senior, tips and overtime deductions (with phase-outs) and the 20% QBI deduction for side-gig profit, applies the 2026 brackets, and subtracts the child tax credit. Your projected payments are what was withheld so far plus your per-paycheck amount times the paychecks left.

FAQ

Why do I owe taxes this year?

The most common reasons are a side gig or 1099 job with no withholding, two jobs that each withhold as if they were your only job, or a spouse who also works. Each employer uses the lower brackets, so together you can be under-withheld.

Will no tax on tips and overtime give me a bigger refund?

Often yes, because most employers still withhold on all your pay. The deduction is claimed on your tax return, so the savings usually show up as a bigger refund.

How much should I add to my W-4?

Divide what you expect to owe by the number of paychecks left this year, and enter that amount in Step 4(c) of a new W-4.

When is the last estimated tax payment for 2026?

January 15, 2027, for the fourth quarter of 2026.

Does this include state tax?

No. It checks federal income tax only. Use our state paycheck calculators to check state withholding.
