City Income Tax Calculator (2026)
Many paycheck calculators skip local income tax, so people in big tax cities see a take-home number that is too high. Pick your city and whether you live there or only work there to see your full paycheck after federal, state and city tax.

Things to know about city taxes
- New York City taxes only residents of the five boroughs. Commuters from New Jersey, Long Island or Westchester do not pay it.
- Philadelphia Wage Tax is 3.735% for residents and 3.425% for non-residents who work in the city, from July 1, 2026. Pre-tax 401(k) contributions do not lower it.
- Ohio cities tax people who work in the city and people who live there. If you live in one city and work in another, your home city usually gives a credit for the tax you paid where you work, so you rarely pay twice in full.
- Detroit charges 2.4% to residents and 1.2% to non-residents who work in the city.
- Kansas City and St. Louis charge a 1% earnings tax on people who live or work in the city.
How this calculator works
It uses the same 2026 federal, Social Security, Medicare and state tax math as our state paycheck calculators, then adds the city tax for the city you pick. Flat city taxes are applied to wages. New York City tax uses the city brackets on New York taxable income. Not every city is listed yet; for other places, the state paycheck calculators have a box to enter your local rate.
FAQ
Do I pay city tax if I only work in New York City?
No. New York City income tax applies only to residents. Non-residents who work in the city pay New York State tax but not city tax.
Why is my Philadelphia tax so high?
Philadelphia has one of the highest local wage taxes in the country, 3.735% for residents from July 1, 2026, and it applies to gross wages before 401(k) deductions.
Do I pay two Ohio city taxes?
Usually your work city withholds its tax, and your home city gives a full or partial credit for it. The rules vary by city, so check your city tax office.
Is city tax deductible on my federal return?
Local income tax can be included in the state and local tax (SALT) deduction only if you itemize.
My city is not listed. What should I do?
Open your state paycheck calculator and type your local tax rate into the local tax box.
