How this calculator works

It works out your full-year federal, Social Security, Medicare and state tax with and without the severance, using the same 2026 tax math as our state paycheck calculators. The difference is the real tax on the severance. Withholding is 22% federal plus Social Security and Medicare. The January comparison adds the severance to the income you expect next year, using 2026 brackets as an estimate. Local taxes and other deductions are not included.

FAQ

Why was so much taken out of my severance?

Severance is wages, so 22% federal tax, 7.65% Social Security and Medicare and state tax are withheld, often 30% or more in total. Part may come back at tax time if your real rate is lower.

Is severance taxed at 22%?

That is the usual federal withholding rate. The actual tax depends on your total income for the year and can be lower or higher.

Does severance affect unemployment?

It depends on the state. Some states reduce or delay unemployment benefits during the weeks covered by severance; others do not.

Is it better to get severance in January?

If you were laid off late in the year and expect lower income next year, taking it in January can put it in a lower bracket. The calculator shows the difference.
